What is the Link Between GLP-1s and NAION?

Recent clinical studies have identified a troubling association between semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) and a rare but devastating eye condition known as NAION.

NAION, often referred to as an “eye stroke,” occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is restricted. This causes sudden, painless vision loss in one or both eyes. There is currently no effective treatment to restore vision lost to NAION, so the damage is typically permanent.

Key Research Findings:

  • Increased Risk: Research published in JAMA Ophthalmology indicated that patients prescribed semaglutide for diabetes or obesity were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with NAION compared to those on other medications.
  • Rapid Weight Loss & Blood Sugar Shifts: Experts are investigating whether the rapid metabolic changes caused by these drugs contribute to optic nerve ischemia in susceptible individuals.

Who Is At Risk?

While anyone taking a GLP-1 medication should be aware of the symptoms, legal investigations are currently focused on individuals who:

  1. Used a GLP-1 medication (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Saxenda, Trulicity or Victoza).
  2. Had no prior history of NAION or significant optic nerve issues.
  3. Developed sudden vision loss or were diagnosed with NAION while using the drug or shortly after stopping.

Recognizing the Symptoms of NAION

If you are currently taking a GLP-1 medication, be vigilant for the following “eye stroke” symptoms:

  • Sudden, painless loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • Blurred or distorted vision that does not improve.
  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision, often described as a shadow or curtain over the field of view.
  • Decreased contrast sensitivity or colors appearing “washed out.”

If you experience these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist and mention your use of GLP-1 medications.

Why File a Lawsuit?

Pharmaceutical companies have a legal obligation to ensure their products are safe and to provide clear warnings about potential side effects. The core of the current litigation alleges:

  • Failure to Warn: The manufacturers knew or should have known about the potential link to optic nerve damage but failed to include NAION on the product’s warning label.
  • Inadequate Testing: Sufficient long-term studies regarding ocular safety were not conducted before these drugs were marketed for mass consumption.

By filing a claim, you may be able to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and the permanent impact on your quality of life.

The time to file a claim is limited due to “statutes of limitations”—legal deadlines that vary by state. If you believe your vision loss is connected to your medication, do not wait to protect your rights.
